Chelsea held by Liverpool as City beats Tottenham to move 2nd

Liverpool secured what turned out to be a deserved point at Stamford Bridge yesterday when Luis Suarez headed an equaliser on 73 minutes and denied Chelsea captain John Terry a winning goal.

Liverpool went into the match against Chelsea on the back of a 5 match unbeaten league run. Chelsea also went into the match in good form sitting in second place in the league table. Liverpool have recorded successive league doubles over their hosts, a statistic which gave Roberto Di Matteo cause to classify the Reds as a ‘bogey team’ in his pre-match press conference.

Terry headed in his 50th Chelsea goal from Juan Mata's corner in the 20th minute after missing the last four domestic matches for racially abusing an opponent.

But 15 minutes later, Terry fell awkwardly after a collision with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, was carried off on a stretcher and later left the ground on crutches with a brace on his right knee.

Chelsea came close to extending their lead on several occasions, most notably when Mata fired over late in the first half and when Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones blocked Fernando Torres' second-half header.

Suarez had been having a quiet game but in the 73rd minute he popped up to claim the equaliser, nodding in from close range after Jamie Carragher flicked on Suso's corner to record his eighth league goal of the campaign.

The result leaves Chelsea third in the table, three points behind United, while Liverpool remain in a distant 13th position.

Manchester City 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Dzeko's late strike gave City victory over Spurs at the Etihad Stadium, as Roberto Mancini's side emulated United's 3-2 win at Aston Villa on Saturday by coming from behind to win.

City trailed to Steven Caulker's 21st-minute opener but drew level through Sergio Aguero in the second half before Dzeko struck late on to close the gap on United to two points.
