Arsenal trashes 10-man Spurs as Chelsea loses and City goes top

Emmanuel Adebayor made a nightmare return to the Emirates Stadium yesterday, his 18th-minute dismissal proving decisive as Arsenal cruised to a 5-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

The former Arsenal forward had already fired his side into a 10th-minute lead when he jumped in on Gunners midfielder Santi Cazorla to earn a straight red card.

From that point on, Arsenal took complete control and were 3-1 up by half-time thanks to goals from Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

Santi Cazorla, the Gunners’ Spanish magician, scored the fourth on the hour mark and Theo Walcott added the fifth in the closing stages either side of a Gareth Bale strike that will offer little consolation to Tottenham supporters.

The final score mirrors the same fixture last season, the turning point in Arsenal’s campaign, and takes the Gunners up to sixth in the Premier League, two points ahead of Spurs.

The boos that have greeted recent Arsenal performances here were replaced by a sound of ‘Ole’ as Arsene Wenger’s side toyed with their great rivals, a renewed optimism sweeping around the red half of north London.

Norwich City 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United’s title aspirations took a knock after a shock 1-0 loss to Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday night.

Norwich winger Anthony Pilkington scored the only goal of the game shortly after half time when his looping header found it’s way past Anders Lindegaard in goal. Despite pressure from United the home side held on for a famous victory. The defeat leaves Sir Alex Ferguson’s side trailing new league leaders Manchester City by one point after they battered Aston Villa 5-0 earlier in the day.

Man City 5-0 Aston Villa

A brace from both Carloz Tevez and fellow countryman Sergio Aguero helped Man City to a five-goal romp against Aston Villa at the Etihad on Saturday, a result that sees the Citizens go top of the table.

Despite dominating the first half, it took until the 43rd minutes for City to finally make the breakthrough, when David Silva netted from close-range.

After the break, Tevez and Aguero bagged their braces, with each player netting one from the penalty spot. Aguero’s first and City’s second, netted on 54 minutes, came after a particularly controversial decision by lino Adrian Holmes, who flagged for a non-existent handball by Andreas Weimann.

West Brom 2-1 Chelsea

West Bromwich Albion continued their remarkable start to the season by deservedly beating Chelsea 2-1 at the Hawthorns.

Long scored the first and set up the second to give the Baggies a victory which cements their best start to a league season in 35 years and extends the Blues' winless Premier League run to four matches.

The result gave West Brom boss Steve Clarke a famous triumph over his former club, while Roberto Di Matteo tasted defeat at the same ground where Andre Villas-Boas' Blues reign ended last term.
