Di mateo sacked as Juventus leaves Chelsea close to CL exit

Chelsea's hopes of defending their Champions League title were left hanging by a thread after an emphatic 0-3 loss to a dominant Juventus at Juventus Arena.

Chelsea went into the clash one point ahead of the Bianconeri in Group E but were dominated throughout and found no answer to goals in either half from Fabio Quagliarella and Arturo Vidal.

The champions' hopes of any kind of fightback were dashed when second half substitute Sebastian Giovinco beat the onrushing Petr Cech in the first minute of injury time to secure a 3-0 win.

Juventus is second in Group E, two points above Chelsea and one behind Shakhtar Donetsk, which it faces in the last group match. Chelsea needs to beat Nordsjaelland and wait for Shakhtar to defeat Juve in the last group matches to go through.

Roberto Di Mateo fired

Manager Roberto Di Matteo has been sacked by Chelsea after just eight months in charge.

Di Matteo won the Champions League and FA Cup as caretaker manager last season and was given a two-year deal in June.

But after failing to register a win in the Premier League in four attempts, along with an inconsistent campaign in Europe which could see the club eliminated at the group stage, Di Matteo was ousted from his role as Chelsea now search for their ninth manager in eight-and-a-half years.

"The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first-team manager," a statement said.

Owner Roman Abramovich, who is looking for a ninth manager since taking over at Stamford Bridge in 2003, is known to be a long-term admirer of former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

However it is not known whether Guardiola is willing to end his sabbatical from football and Abramovich has made contact with former Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez to gauge his interest in taking charge on a short-term basis.
