Europa League: Tottenham rout Inter as Chelsea lose to Steaua
Chelsea put in a lacklustre performance in Bucharest, falling 1-0 to hosts Steaua on a historic night for the Romanian club.
Interim manager Rafael Benitez named a strong side which included Frank Lampard, Brazilian starlet Oscar, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres, but the Premier League side failed to make an impact away from home.
Steaua striker Raul Rusescu’s 34th minute penalty put the home side in the ascendancy ahead of their visit to Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea never looked like turning the tide as they appeared to struggle to complete a succession of passes.
Meanwhile, Tottenham will head to Milan next week holding a commanding 3-0 lead over Inter courtesy of goals from Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen in the first leg of the Europa League last-16.
Sigurdsson picked up where he left off against Arsenal on Sunday, finding the Welshman with a teasing cross, before pouncing on Samir Handanovic's parry to double the lead. Vertonghen added a third with a powerful close-range header in the second half.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United looked comfortable in holding Anzhi Makhachkala to a goalless draw.
The Magpies struggled to create a lot of chances but they managed to keep Anzhi at bay to take a goalless draw back to St James' Park for the second leg.
