FA Cup: Man City awaits Chelsea v Man Utd Replay
Ramires forced a replay for Chelsea as they stunned Manchester United with a second half fightback to make it 2-2 on the night in the FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson opted to field Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez up front. His star striker and top scorer Robin van Persie started on the bench. Nani, Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverley, and Michael Carrick operating in midfield and both flanks.
Meanwhile Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez decided to put Demba Ba up front while Fernando Torres on the bench. Juan Mata, Victor Moses, and Oscar providing the support. Ramires and Frank Lampard partnering in midfield.
The hosts started the game brightly as they opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Carrick sent a fine pass to Hernandez who followed it up with a header into the back of the net past Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Six minutes later, Rooney celebrated his recall by giving Untied a two-goal advantage.
The forward, who has been linked with a summer exit from Old Trafford after surprisingly dropping to the bench against Real Madrid, curled a free-kick in at Petr Cech’s far post.
United were in control until the break with the away fans again venting their ire at interim boss Benitez. However, a double substitution by the Spaniard proved inspired.
Mata played provider for Hazard to net from just inside the United box as the Belgian took one touch before curling the ball high into the net beyond De Gea.
With United being forced further and further back, Chelsea equalised when Luiz broke up a home attack before Chelsea bounded to the other end. Demba Ba released Ramires on the run and he planted a crisp shot beyond the diving De Gea.
Chelsea could easily have won it in the death throes of the match, but De Gea's goal would not be breached for a third time as the keeper made another save from a blistering Hazard hit moments after he had somehow prevented Mata from sinking the winner.
