Arsenal exit Champions League on the away goals rule
Arsenal won 2-0 away to stun Bayern Munich in Germany but still crashed out of the Champions League on the away goals rule.
Olivier Giroud stunned the 68,000 sell-out Allianz Arena with a third-minute goal to give the visitors hope of pulling off a Munich miracle.
Despite Bayern dominating for most of the match, Arsenal held firm at the back and Laurent Koscielny's 84th-minute header equalled the scores on aggregate.
This set up a pulsating finale but the Gunners were unable to find the one last goal required to overturn the Germans' away-goals advantage.
Bayern lacked anything resembling intensity at Allianz Arena and were forced to hold on to a 2-0 loss in order to get into the pot for Friday’s draw. If they have any intention of advancing from the next round, they’ll have to find another gear, and fast.
As for Arsenal, they can now focus on the Premier League now. Moreover, this is the first time since 95/96 that not a single English side advanced to the Champions League’s last eight.
