Man Utd secure 20th league title after defeating Aston Villa 3-0
Manchester United have won their 20th league title and 13th Premier League trophy with four games to spare after defeating Aston Villa 3-0 on Monday night.
Robin van Persie bagged a magnificent first-half hat-trick to fire himself to the top of the scoring charts and Manchester United to Premier League title glory.
After the hurt of having their crown snatched away by Manchester City on goal difference in stoppage time on the final day of the 2011-12 season, United were determined to make sure of the title with four games to spare.
The Red Devils got off to a dream start with less than 90 seconds on the clock after a move started by a delightful long pass from Wayne Rooney.
Another superb pass from deep by Rooney from the halfway line set up Van Persie for an exquisite left-foot volley from just outside the box that flew into the net.
Van Persie's second strike was hailed by Sir Alex Ferguson as "the goal of the century", with the manager stating the recruit from Arsenal on a £24m deal last summer has been pivotal to United's triumph. "He's been unbelievable. I think that he has to take a lot of the credit. I think his goals tell you that, his performance levels told you that. But I'm sure Robin would be saying what a great bunch of players he's had with him."
His third, on 33 minutes, again involved Giggs who was fed by Shinji Kagawa before finding Van Persie in the box. The Dutchman had time to shift the ball on to his left foot before sending it in off the post for his 24th league goal of the season.
Long since accepted as the summer signing that made the difference, van Persie underlined his value by ensuring there was never a chance Aston Villa might prevent their hosts from collecting the victory required to celebrate championship number 20 in front of their own fans at Old Trafford.

The win takes United even closer to breaking Chelsea's record in 2005 and 2006 of 29 league wins in a single season, with the Red Devils currently on 27 wins. They also still have a chance to break the Blues' mark of 95 points in a single season.
Rio Ferdinand appeared to have a dig at Manchester City when he suggested Manchester United's title win had been more valuable as it had not been done on goal difference, in contrast to their rivals' end-of-season triumph last time round.
"It's always sweet when you win the title and it's nice to do it here, in the right way and in style, not on goal difference," said Ferdinand, whose title was his sixth. "We have won it outright and we have won it comfortably."
