Champions League: Bayern Munich beats Arsenal 2-0 at Emirates

Bayern Munich took the advantage in their Champions League last 16 tie with Arsenal yesterday courtesy of a 2-0 win at the Emirates.

Both sides missed a penalty in the first half, while the hosts had Wojciech Szczesny sent off for a foul on Arjen Robben inside the area.

Arsenal put the European champions under pressure at the start but their night began going wrong as early as the eighth minute when Mesut Ozil’s soft penalty was saved.

Before half-time, keeper Szczesny had been sent off and conceded a penalty, which David Alaba missed.

Bayern, though, went ahead on 54 minutes with a superb 20-yard strike from Kroos, which was whipped into the top corner past substitute keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

It was all Bayern in the closing stages as they peppered the Arsenal box with crafty through-balls and crosses aplenty, and substitute Thomas Mueller added another in the dying moments with a diving header.

There was almost time for a final flourish from Kroos when he sent a low shot against the post.

Arsenal, however, will not believe this tie is over after pulling off a stunning second leg win in Munich last season.

Elsewhere, an away goal from Diego Costa earned Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over AC Milan in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 encounter.

The Brazil-born hitman thumped a sensational far post header beyond Christian Abbiati seven minutes from time after Ignazio Abate had inadvertently flicked a corner into his path.

The Visitors were on a great tempo right from the first whistle but struggled to fashion any clear cut chance. The home side slowly began to find their feet and could have gone ahead when Kaka’s effort was pushed on to the cross bar by Thiabut Courtois and the Belgian again produced a terrific save to deny Poly as he saved the header brilliantly from close range.

Mario Balotelli and kaka combined to create yet another chance for the hosts but the Brazilian’s effort flew just over. Balotelli had a go by himself when he took a shot from range only to see it bend wide of the goal.

Atletico, though, were one of only three unbeaten teams during the group stage and have the confidence of a side level on points with Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of La Liga. As Milan tired, Diego Simeone's men came to the fore.

Gradually pressing Milan back, Los Rojiblancos could have taken the lead when Garcia was found on the edge of the six-yard box, only for his shot to fly high over the bar.

However Diego Costa converted when it mattered most as he headed past the keeper leaving Abbiati no chance and giving his side the lead.
