Man City beat Sunderland 3-1 to win Capital One Cup Final

Manchester City stormed back with three fine goals in the second half to beat Sunderland 3-1 in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley.

Despite controlling the early tempo, City was given a warning when Jack Colback tapped home Borini's slide pass, but the whistle had long since gone for offside.

Having survived that scare, Sergio Aguero, making his return from a month-long injury absence, made his first contribution on nine minutes when he forced Mannone into a smart save from 20 yards.

The David and Goliath narrative, however, was imploded in the 10th minute thanks to a gem of a goal by Fabio Borini.

Lee Cattermole nicked possession from Fernandinho in the middle of the pitch, and Borini's run past Martin Demichelis was picked out in expert fashion by Adam Johnson.

The striker was able to hold off Vincent Kompany's feeble challenge to get in on goal, and he finished off the move with a wonderful finish across Costel Pantilimon and in at the far post.

Poyet's men still looked remarkably assured, however, and it required a superb last-ditch tackle from Kompany to prevent Borini having another opportunity to score on 38 minutes after the Italian had broken free of the defense.

Seeking a swift response after the break, City saw David Silva hit a tame effort at Mannone, before at the other end Ki Sung-Yueng's flash shot from distance forced Costel Pantilimon into action.

Yaya Toure equalised with a brilliant instant finish from 25 yards in the 55th minute, before Samir Nasri's spectacular strike changed the entire course of the game and set City on the way to some sort of consolation for last May's shock FA Cup final defeat by Wigan Athletic.

Substitute Jesus Navas added a third in the final minute to give the scoreline a harsh appearance given the manner in which the Black Cats had matched City for so long.

City's focus now turns to the Premier League title, the arduous task of overturning a two-goal deficit in their Champions League last-16 tie against Barcelona and an FA Cup quarter-final clash with Wigan Athletic.
