International Friendlies: England, Spain, Germany & Brazil win
All qualified nations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup played their last game before selecting their final squad for Brazil, last night.
England beat Denmark 1-0 at Wembley Stadium with a late header from the Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge. Having failed to find the net in their prior two matches, the Three Lions had to work hard to break the Danish defence.
World Champions Spain defeated Italy by 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid. Barcelona’s Pedro Rodriguez scored the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute. The game also served for Brazilian-born striker, Diego Costa, to make his debut with the team after he decided to join the Spaniards instead of his birth country.
World Cup host Brazil trashed South Africa 5-0 in Johannesburg. Neymar netted a hat-tick whilst Oscar and Fernandinho also were on the score sheet.
Germany beat Chile 1-0 in Stuttgart and although the South Americans played much better than their opponents, they could not avoid Mario Gotze scoring after a killer pass from Mezut Ozil.
Argentina played out a disappointing goalless draw in Bucharest against Romania. With players upfront such as Messi, Aguero, Higuain and Di Maria, the Albiceleste was unable to break the deadlock against a solid and well-organized Romanian defence.
