Super Sunday clash of titan Premiership clubs – Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea
Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea on super sunday in London derby
Table-topping Arsenal aimed to make a title statement against a one-down, wounded FC Chelsea on Super Sunday at Emirates Stadium in London in a mouth-watering clash of the wealthy titan Premiership superclass. With tittle aspiration, Arsenal looked to earn all three points to stay in first place on top of the Barclays Premier League, while Chelsea was desperate to win three points to launch a drive up the table with new boss Guus Hiddink at the helm to avoid possible relegation this season.
Although Arsenal fans hoped Jose Mourinho’s exit as Chelsea boss would benefit Arsenal’s current title race, the opposite proved true. The Gunners lost, putting a dent in Arsenal’s title hopes, having not won a London Derby against Chelsea since October 2011. As a result of Chelsea’s impressive victory, the Blues earned a big three points and emerged the derby winner for the 12th straight season.
Settin an unusual pace, Per Mertesacker was sent off with a red card after only 18 minutes. Diego Costa scored the only goal in the clash a few minutes later. With a win and 3 points under their belt, Chelsea are optimistic that new boss Guus Hiddink will continue to turn the season around. The league-leading Gunners moved down the table to third place.
The holding 2014-15 Premiership Champions, Chelsea, moved up to 13th place on the EPL table after their win against the Gunners at Emirates Stadium. Chelsea traveled across town to face the formidable Gunners in the midst of the Blues worst Premiership campaign in history, performing match after match in a haze, appearing to be only a shadow of the powerful superclub that danced their way to the EPL title last term with former manager Jose Mourinho at the helm.
Key footballers for Chelsea, Mesut Ozil, and Alexis Sanchez returned to compete for the Blues on Sunday. A key player in the match should have been Olivier Giroud who stepped up to score 18 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions so far this campaign. Leicester City are back on top of the England Premier League table going into February after Arsenal suffered their first home defeat since West Ham on the opening day of the 2015-16 season after going into the battle with Chelsea on top. The Gunners are now third, behind the Foxes and Man City.
This was by far Chelsea’s best performance of the season. Men of the match were Cesc Fàbregas and Diego Costa.
