EPL Week 5 match report

Man City 4-0 Bournemouth
De Bruyne (15’min)
Iheanacho (25’min)
Sterling (48’min)
Gundogan (66’min)
Nolito (dismissed 86’)

Mighty Manchester City have won an astonishing nine times in their first nine matches of the 2016 – 2017 pro football season in all competitions under the leadership of new manager Pep Guardiola, the first top-flight team to achieve this feat since Chelsea, who had a run of nine games in 2005-06. City cruised past Bournemouth 4-0 at the Etihad on Saturday.

In a scintillating clash against the Cherries at the Etihad, Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring and put the Premier League leaders ahead with a low free-kick under the wall after a Jack Wilshere mess-up. City were dominant against Bournemouth throughout the match as Kelechi Iheanacho and Raheem Sterling scored a goal each. Ilkay Gundogan slotted in a fourth. Chilean international Man City goalie Claudio Bravo gets credit for City’s first clean sheet of the season. However Bournemouth was unable to score a single goal.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper, Bravo, joined Man City this summer for a reported £17 million after two seasons at Camp Nou where he was slated for a back-up role to Germany international Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the defending Spanish La Liga champions. Superstar striker Sergio Aguero was serving the second game of his three-match ban. Even without the suspended Aguero, City led 2-0 at half-time after strikes from De Bruyne and Iheanacho. The Sky Blues added to the goal tally after the break with strikes from Sterling and Gundogan, who made his Premier League debut. City’s only setback was a late red card for Nolito.

Spain international Nolito's 86th-minute sending-off was for a needless head butt on Bournemouth’s Adam Smith. Nolito will now miss City’s next three games, including a massive clash away at Tottenham Hotspur.

England international John Stones was on the City bench with club skipper Vincent Kompany who was rested after his recovery from a long-term groin problem. David Silva was out due to injury. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was obviously delighted with his side’s quality, enjoying Man City's 4-0 thumping of Bournemouth. Jack Wilshere, made his first start since joining Bournemouth on loan from Arsenal. Belgium international De Bruyne was fouled by Wilshere getting even by drilling the resulting free kick low under Bournemouth's leaping wall leaving Cherries’ goalie Boruc helpless as a result.

Wilshere almost cost his team another goal minutes later giving up possession of the ball on the halfway line, as Boruc came to his rescue by keeping out Nolito's close-range strike. City doubled their lead as Nolito's mindful pass found De Bruyne who set up an unselfish sure-thing goal for Iheanacho, his 10th in the Premier League from a total of only 14 shots on target. Sterling scored only three minutes into the second period. Then City finished off the Cherries with a perfect goal after 66 minutes involving De Bruyne, Gael Clichy, Nolito, then midfielder Gundogan who delivered a side-footed finish past Boruc.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe gave his evaluation of the game. "It was a tough day. Manchester City were excellent. The nature of the first two goals against us was disappointing,” said Howe. "They're a very impressive team. When you play against the best, your learning is accelerated. That said, we had some opportunities but didn't make the most of them. We weren't at our very best, but you have to give them credit."

"Initially for us, there are going to be some disappointing days, that is the reality and I think the key thing is from my perspective and the players' perspective is to brush it off and go again. That's certainly what we did last year,” continued Howe. “You certainly can't dwell on it, you can't let it affect your mood, your daily routines, because there is another game just around the corner. We try and prepare well for every game we play and we cannot reflect on the fact we lost 4-0."

Manchester City next play Premier League club Swansea City away at Liberty Stadium, and Bournemouth next face EPL 2nd place club Everton at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, September 24.
