Capital One Cup: Chelsea beat Man Utd in 9-goal thriller

Chelsea exacted their revenge in a thrilling nine goal cup tie between the two leading sides in the Premier League.

Giggs opened up the scoring, just after twenty minutes, but David Luiz’s penalty cancelled out the former Wales International’s first goal of the night. It didn’t matter too much to the away side, as Hernandez gave United the lead again, two minutes before half time.

Cahill put the home side back on level terms seven minutes after the break, his fourth goal of the season in fact, making him the highest scoring centre-back in top tier. Nani then added a spectacular effort into the mix to give United the lead once again, after finding space in the area, before lifting it over Cech.

The Manchester based club were on the verge of winning their second game at Stamford Bridge in five days. But Eden Hazard’s injury-time penalty meant the sides had to play an extra half an hour to decide the outcome of the scintillating encounter.

Chelsea took the lead for the first time on the night, when Daniel Sturridge finished a huge error from rookie centre-back Wooton’s back header to Lindegaard, which Sturridge caimed, took round the goalkeeper and tapped in. Ramires then added to champions of Europe’s tally, once again, coming after some excellent play from the home side, which included leaving two United defenders for dead.

Ryan Giggs had United’s last say of the night, slotting home his second of the night from the penalty spot, after Azpilicueta brought down Hernandez.

In other matches, Tottenham Hotspur buckled under Norwich pressure in the last few minutes to give up their one-goal lead to eventually lose 1-2 to Norwich. Clint Dempsey had a chance to equalise from the penalty spot in the dying minutes, but the American could not convert. Gareth Bale had give Spurs the lead but a Jan Vertonghen own goal and a Simeone Jackson effort in the 87th minute cancelled out the Welshman’s opener.

For Liverpool, times are getting worse. They failed to win at Anfield against Swansea with goals from Chico, Nathan Dyer and De Guzman giving the away team a 3-1 win.
