Man Utd held by Swansea 1-1 as Chelsea trash Aston Villa 8-0

Manchester United missed the chance to extend their lead in the title race to six points as Michu came out on top in the battle of the Barclays Premier League's top scorers at the Liberty Stadium.

Patrice Evra had given United the lead in the 16th minute as he headed home from a Robin van Persie corner.

But Swansea continued their good record against the top-flight big guns as Michu finished from close range to move clear of Van Persie with his 13th league goal of the season.

It was United’s first draw of the season in all competitions and leaves them four points above second-place City ahead of the home game with Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal climbed to third place with a 1-0 win at third-bottom Wigan Athletic on Saturday and they are one of four teams on 30 points along with Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion.

Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa

Chelsea thumped Aston Villa 8-0 in a farcically one-sided encounter at Stamford Bridge.

Fernando Torres gave Rafael Benitez’s men a flying start with a stunning third-minute header before a David Luiz free kick and Branislav Ivanovic header made sure the points were safe before halftime.

Two goals from Ramirez and strikes from Frank Lampard, Oscar and Eden Hazard completed the emphatic scoreline after the break as the Blues matched their best-ever Premier League result to move up to third in the table.

The biggest roar of the day as Chelsea brushed away a feeble Villa side was reserved for Lampard, who celebrated his 500th Premier League start with a wonderful goal struck from 30 yards out in the 59th minute.

The midfielder’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the Chelsea crowd made their feelings clear to owner Roman Abramovich, singing ‘sign him up’ after Lampard overtook Bobby Tambling's club record of 129 league goals.

Villa remain in 16th place in the league, although this result now gives them the worst goal difference in the league, -17. Chelsea move up from 7th to 3rd and are now only seven points off second-place Manchester City with a game in hand.
