FA Cup: Chelsea to face Man Utd after beating Middlesbrough

Chelsea set up a FA Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United with a 2-0 win against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

The Premier League club field a weakened side from that which lost 2-0 at Manchester City at the weekend, and it showed as they served up a poor example for a side of their means in a dire first half.

The Blues took the lead when midfielder Ramires' 51st-minute shot flicked Fernando Torres, who knew little or nothing about it, and flew past keeper Jason Steele before the impressive Victor Moses made sure with a close-range finish 15 minutes from time.

A turgid first half saw Chelsea struggle to string two passes together, unsurprising given they had made eight changes from the weekend.

Boro, meanwhile, had more possession but have serious injury problems of their own and were equally disjointed, with their fitness woes worsening after Andre Bikey pulled a hamstring midway through the half.

The hosts did have the better chances though, Scott McDonald heading wide from an excellent Nicky Bailey cross, and Mustapha Carayol almost beating a nervy Petr Cech with a bouncing drive.

Chelsea came out in the second half with intent and were rewarded just six minutes after the break.

Ramires curled home a right-footed shot from the edge of the area which took a deflection off Torres on its way into the top corner.

The visitors could have doubled their lead on the hour but Torres' shot whistled over the bar after he managed to beat Boro's offside trap.

The game was eventually wrapped up in the 72nd minute when Oscar and substitute Eden Hazard picked apart the Boro defence before Moses capped off a fine move with an easy tap in.

It keeps Chelsea, the winner of the FA Cup for four of the past six seasons, in the hunt for silverware on two fronts this season. The team also through to the last 16 of the Europa League.

The Blues will play Manchester United - the current Premier League leader - at Old Trafford on March 10.
