FIFA Ballon d'Or 2013 Shortlist revealed
FIFA and France Football have revealed the 23-man shortlist for the 2013 Fifa Ballon d'Or, with title-holder Lionel Messi, Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery, Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo and world-record signing Gareth Bale among the candidates to win the individual award.
All players nominated for the award are currently based in Europe, with Champions League holders Bayern Munich rewarded for their efforts with six players — Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger — listed.
Messi, winner of the last four Ballon d'Or awards in voting by coaches, team captains and media, was injured late in the season and could not prevent Barcelona from being beaten by Bayern in the Champions League semifinals.
Barcelona also have Xavi, Andres Iniesta and summer signing Neymar among the candidates, while Paris Saint-Germain trio Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva also made the cut.
In early December 2013, Fifa and France Football will announce the names of the three men who have received the most votes, without revealing the winner.
The winners of the award will be revealed at the Fifa Ballon d’Or gala as part of a televised show at the Zurich Kongresshaus on 13 January 2014.
Jose Mourinho, Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Jupp Heynckes are among the 10 candidates to win the Fifa World Coach of the Year award.
Heynckes guided Bayern Munich to a historic treble in 2012-13, only to step down at the end of the season to make way for Pep Guardiola.
Ferguson, meanwhile, won the Premier League title with Manchester United last term before retiring from professional football, while Rafa Benitez also features after winning the Europa League as Chelsea's interim manager.
