Chelsea eliminated from Champions League by superb Atletico Madrid

Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League yesterday as they lost the second leg of the semifinals 3-1 to Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

Adrian Lopez cancelled out Fernando Torres opener in the first half. Torres decided not to celebrate the goal against his former team but eventually the Blues got nothing to celebrate anyways.

Diego Costa netted from the penalty spot after substitute Samuel Eto’o had brought him down clumsily inside the area.

Chelsea went forward in search of the two goals they needed to advance into the finals and they were close to grab one when Luiz headed the ball against the crossbar but a superb Thibaut Courtois somehow managed to send it over the line for a corner.

Arda Turan extended the lead and killed the game eighteen minutes from time as the Turkish sent the ball into an empty net when he luckily grabbed the rebound off the bar from his own header.

"One minute in the second half decided everything," Mourinho told reporters at the press conference after the match.

"A minute where the Atletico goalkeeper makes an impossible save to a John Terry header then the penalty that kills the game. After that there was only one team with morale high, knowing with half an hour left they had control.”

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was delighted with his team's display at Stamford Bridge.

He said: "We did everything within our power to get through to the final and we deserve to be there, as do Real Madrid."

"Tonight was the result of a big collective effort. We generated that possibility of us reaching a beautiful final. I want to thank the mothers of these players because they gave birth to them with balls this big,"

Atletico will face bitter neighbours Real Madrid in Lisbon on May 24th. It will be the first time two teams from the same city will feature in a Champions League final.
