If Liverpool win the Europa League Final in Basel, the Reds will qualify to compete in the Champions League next season. A Europa League trophy would be a feather in the cap of new Liverpool boss, Jürgen Klopp who took over from Brendan Rodgers at the start of the current season.

Premier League: Liverpool v Chelsea

Klopp takes charge of his 50th Liverpool game as manager on Wednesday when Chelsea visit Anfield Road for the Reds’ final home game of the season. The match pits eighth place FC Liverpool versus ninth place Chelsea in a popular historic Premier League rivalry between the two superclubs.

“I’m not too interested in when Chelsea can next win the title; and I have no idea when we can - but I promise we will try everything to build on the base of this season,” said Klopp. “We can get sixth position this season. It isn’t the biggest success in the history of Liverpool but everyone interested in Liverpool can see the good signs and we will build on it.”

“We have to improve and I am sure we will. A lot of things need to be perfect for a really good season. I’m really looking forward to next season, to pre-season, but this season we are still looking for what we can get.” Liverpool next take on FC Chelsea at home at Anfield Road aiming to finish in sixth place in the England Premier League this season. An inspired and improved Liverpool team defeated Watford 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday to keep the Reds’ hopes of a top-six EPL finish alive. Watford was behind at half-time due to a Joe Allen strike before substitute Roberto Firmino sealed 3 points for Liverpool with his 11th goal of the season. The victory sees the Reds move to within just two points of sixth-placed Southampton while Watford stay 13th.

Jurgen Klopp inherited Brazilian attacker Roberto Firmino when he took over at Anfield last October. Klopp is excited about the quality of Firmino who has blossomed following his £29 million move from Hoffenheim. Sunday’s goal against Watford was Firmino’s 11th goal of the campaign. He has been involved in more Premier League goals this season than any other Liverpool player, combining goals and assists. “Now with Roberto you can see the confidence in his work. All the players are more confident than before because they’ve had more time working together,” said Klopp. “We’ve had an intense time but it’s been a good time together. We know a lot more about each other.”

Of note is that veteran Chelsea football star, John Terry, was booked with his second red card of the Premier League season at Sunderland. As a result, Terry will be banned for Chelsea’s last clashes of the season with Liverpool and Leicester City. Possibly Terry has played his last games in his career at the club. Last January, thirty-five-year-old former England defender Terry revealed that he would be leaving Chelsea. Incoming Chelsea boss Antonio Conte will have the final say of whether Terry will be offered a new contract when interim manager Guus Hiddink leaves at the end of the season.

When asked if Terry’s appearance in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat would be his last, Hiddink replied, “For the club, I don’t know, but it’s sad, of course, that he was sent off for a second yellow. I think the referee was too close to the incident. Normally we say, ’Referee, be close to what can happen’, but I think he was too close and an impulsive reaction made him draw the yellow card. With a little bit more distance he could have thought, ‘Hey, these two guys went intensively for the duel’, said Hiddink. “It was an intense game, and he has to consider a bit the intensity of the game and this duel as well. He was too close, for me, and took too harsh a decision.”

Hiddink remarked that being suspended is a sad way for Terry to end his Chelsea career. “We don’t know what his future is at this moment, but for this season, it’s sad because it would have been lovely to have had him in our last game at home, the Leicester game, against the champions, and have a very nice party game. Let’s call it that, and it’s sad that he is not participating in that,” said Hiddink.

The former England captain was told in January that Chelsea would not be offering him a third 12-month extension. Terry had an extremely successful trophy-laden career with Chelsea and England and was capped 78 times, earned four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and three League Cups, won the Europa League, but missed Chelsea’s Champions League Final victory through suspension, having been sent off in the semi-final. “It’s not going to be a fairytale ending, I’m not going to retire at Chelsea,” said Terry.

Liverpool is favored to win the upcoming Europa League Final against Sevilla, but some Liverpool fans are concerned about the UEFA’s choice of referee for the match. Swedish multi-millionaire Jonas Eriksson will referee the Europa League Final in Basel. Fourty-two year old Eriksson was also in charge the last time the Reds visited St Jakob-Park for a Champions League group clash in October 2014 that ended in Brendan Rodgers’ side being defeated 1-0.

In the past Eriksson offended then Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez in April 2010 after overseeing the Reds’ 2-1 defeat away to Benfica in the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League. Benitez was furious by Eriksson’s decision to only book Luisao for a reckless challenge on former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

In the past however, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has benefited from a contentious decision by Eriksson. The wealthy Swedish referee opted to only book Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski for hitting Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny with an elbow at the Emirates in a Champions League game in October 2013. Lewandowski then scored a late winner.

Former journalist Eriksson sold a 15% stake in Swedish sports media business IEC for around £6 million nine years ago. “I’ve had a fantastic life as a businessman, but since 2011 I’ve dedicated myself to being a professional referee and I’m having the time of my life,” said Eriksson. “All the money hasn’t changed anything, the best thing I do in my life is still refereeing football.”

Jurgen Klopp has his side ready for the fight for 2016 Europa League silverware. Klopp seemed to enjoy his first seven months at Liverpool as he got to know team supporters, learned the nuances of competing in the Premier League, and increased the potential of his side. Klopp looks forward to building the foundation of his team with the experience of Europa League competition going forward into next season.

Liverpool travel to the Hawthorns to play their final Premier League match of the season against West Bromwich Albion on May 15; then three days later Liverpool travel to Basel, Switzerland to compete in the Europa League Final for the silverware and a spot in the Champions League next season.
