Champions League News: 2016-17 Champions League Tickets

Real Madrid Win 2016 Champions League

Real Madrid are the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League winners, having defeated Madrid arch-rivals Atletico Madrid in a penalty shoot-out on May 28 winning 5-3 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in relegation time at the San Siro in Milan, Italy to be crowned 2016 Kings of Europe winning the coveted trophy for the second time in three years. Real Madrid maintained their 100% success rate in UEFA Champions League finals, winning five out of five. Zinédine Zidane’s side have passed Spanish La Liga rivals FC Barcelona as the UEFA Champions League-era's most successful club, with five wins to four. Real Madrid boss Zinédine Zidane is the first French manager to win the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo, the world's highest-paid athlete, scored the match-winning goal. After scoring Real Madrid's decisive penalty goal, Ronaldo said: "I had the feeling I would score the winning goal”

“I had to score. I told Zidane to leave me until last, and everything went well. It was a great night, winning my third Champions League title; it's a dream,” continued Ronaldo. “We're really happy, finals are always hard. The team were great and sacrificed a lot. It's really impressive. I knew I was going to score the winning penalty; I was confident. I'm happy, and I want to share these trophies with all the Madrid fans.”

“I'm very happy. It's been an excellent season and we've won the Champions League, the most difficult trophy to win. There are no words to describe the happiness that we feel: the players, the fans, their families. It's a special moment,” added CR7. “Now I will rest for a couple of days. Portugal coach Fernando Santos gave me a few days off to rest, and obviously that will drive me to play a good European Championship. I won't promise we'll win, but we have to believe that it's possible. We have an excellent team and a good coach. Our group is difficult, but in my eyes it's doable. And from there on, after the first round anything can happen.”

Next, Real Madrid footballers prepare to compete in Euro 2016. Real Madrid football players Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe. (Portugal), Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vázquez, Isco (Spain), Toni Kroos (Germany), Gareth Bale (Wales) and Luka Modrić (Croatia) received their UEFA Champions League winners medals with pride – all hoping for another coveted medal in this summer’s Euro 2016 Championship. Hundreds of thousands of Real Madrid fans turned out to welcome home the European Champions from their victory in Milan. Supporters lined the streets celebrating Real’s 11th Champions League Cup triumph.

The Merengues basked in glory at Plaza de Cibeles wearing custom made ‘11’ shirts, partying with fans as team captain and scorer of the winning penalty goal Sergio Ramos wrapped a Real Madrid flag around a statue of goddess Cybele. The Real Madrid side later appeared in suits at the evening party at Madrid's town hall hosted by Madrid mayor Manuela Carmena. Ramos made emotional remarks at the party. "Thank you for all the love you've shown," said Ramos. "This is the fruit of a lot of work, from the players, coaches and staff. It has been a season of ups and down and we've seen that when you set yourself a goal, you can reach it. This is fruit of that effort. Both we and Atlético represent football all over the world and that's a sense of pride for us.”

Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez presented the mayor with a team shirt and the entire group poured out of the town hall into city-center square Puerta del Sol and a reception that included shirt-signing and speeches. The Real Madrid side led by master of ceremonies Cristiano Ronaldo was greeted by tens of thousands of fans. The Madrid football players sang 'Campeones' and other songs to the crowd and presented the UEFA Champions League trophy to fans before going to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu to continue the party.
