EPL Week 4 highlights

Manchester United 1-2 Manchester City

The big epic clash of Week 4 was the exciting Manchester Derby played at Old Trafford between arch-rivals Manchester United and their “noisy neighbors” Manchester City. City claimed their fourth victory of the 2016-17 season. The explosive game featured tense confrontations, highly-paid superstar footballers, and the added element of the long-standing professional rivalry between Man United’s new manager Portugese Jose Mourinho and new Man City boss Pep Guardiola. “Mou” and “Pep” gave each other a hug before kickoff in anticipation of a renewed rivalry between the titan football managers. Controversial referee Mark Clattenburg officiated the derby making Mourinho angry with controversial calls and ignored fouls.

Manchester City won on Derby Day in Saturday's early match, as City youngsters Kelechi Iheanacho and Kevin De Bruyne stole the show. United’s only goal was a brilliant strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. City boosted their confidence ahead of their clash with Gladbach at the Etihad Stadium after beating Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Derby. Looking ahead to the Champions League, Pep Guardiola said his Manchester City side still some have to improve to compete with the best teams in Europe despite winning all their matches to date at the start of the new EPL season. Going into City's first 2016-17 UEFA Champions League group clash against Borussia Monchengladbach, Guardiola played down his club's position among the European elite titan clubs and praised Lionel Messi. Barcelona's Lionel Messi won the Balloon d’Or competition twice during Guardiola's reign at the Camp Nou.

“To compete with the best teams in Europe we are far away,” said Pep. “Messi. There’s no player better than that. Messi.” Guardiola said he and Jose Mourinho did not share a drink after the Sky Blues' derby victory. "No. We had lot of things to do after the game. We have no time." Former Barca and Bayern Munich boss Guardiola brushed off criticism of his new goalkeeper Claudio Bravo who replaced popular England keeper Joe Hart. Bravo’s mistake led to United's goal by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Pep refused to comment on Mourinho's post-match statement that the Chilean goalie Bravo should have been sent off for fouling United captain Wayne Rooney.

"My goalkeepers will make mistakes, and the opponents will score goals; I am pretty sure of that. I do not speak about referees. The decision is done; sometimes it goes with you or against." City won without key striker Sergio Aguero who missed the derby due to a three-game suspension for elbowing West Ham United's Winston Reid. Guardiola confirmed that Argentina international Kun Aguero is available to face Gladbach. Guardiola won the Champions League twice as Barca manager. However Guardiola failed to win the coveted trophy again during his three seasons with Bayern Munich. Pep is eager to take Man City far into Europe's top cup competition in 2016-17.
