England Premier League Week 6 news

Manchester City unbeaten on top of the English Premier League

After the EPL Week 6 matches, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City remain unbeaten with a whopping 18 points. Tottenham Hotspur has 14 points to date. City’s 3-1 victory against the Swans did not come easily, but Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling stepped up and saw City to their sixth win in six Premier League games at the start of the 2016-17 season. Next coming up in EPL Week 7, Man City battle fellow Champions League contender Tottenham Hotspur who also have yet to lose a Premier League match to date this campaign. If the Spurs defeat the Sky Blues at White Hart Lane they will move to just one point behind City. A win for City will put them at least five points clear at the top of the table going into week 8.

EPL Week 6 Match Report

Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea

Mesut Ozil scored his first 2016 home goal at Emirates Stadium during Arsenal's 3-0 win over Antonio Conte’s Chelsea. Petr Cech earned a clean sheet against his former side as the Gunners gave their devoted fans a lot to cheer about. Arsenal remained untouchable in the first 45 minutes aided by the amazing speed and tackling of Bellerin at the back, and skill of goalkeeper Cech. Arsenal superstar striker Alexis Sanchez scored from Gary Cahill’s error racing in the clear to make a mindful finish over Chelsea goalie Thibaut Courtois’ head after 11 minutes as Arsene Wenger’s side began to dismantle Chelsea on their way to earning a fourth Premier League win in a row. Sanchez has scored 47 goals in his first 100 appearances for Arsenal, only one less than Thierry Henry.

Theo Walcott scored from Hector Bellerin's pass three minutes later. Mesut Ozil scored Arsenal's third goal five minutes before the break, from a Sanchez assist, and Chelsea was on their way to a second league loss in a row as mighty Arsenal moved up to third on the table. The Gunners showed high quality and composure, pace, and skill, obviously enjoying being at the top of their game. Arsenal's fans left Emirates Stadium with renewed optimism as expressed by boss Arsene Wenger. "We feel as though we are on the way up," reported Wenger.

Chelsea previously looked tired against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last week, their first loss under Italian Conte. Conte is under pressure to perform at the top due to demanding owner Roman Abramovich after his success at Juventus and Italy. Conte’s side were definitely not at the top of their game against the Gunners. Chelsea relies on 35-year-old captain John Terry who is out with injury. Branislav Ivanovic and England defender Cahill did not perform well as Cahill was responsible for Sanchez's match opener and later involved in an argument with Courtois in the second half. Kante is not yet matching his quality of last in the midfield at Leicester City. Cesc Fabregas was off his pace and substituted. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa were also not at their best.

World-class footballers Sanchez and man-of-the-match Mesut Ozil are at the peak of their powers, and Arsenal were outstanding in all areas. Ozil's goal against Chelsea was his second of the season. Arsene Wenger inflicted Antonio Conte's heaviest league defeat since October 2010, when Conte was manager of Siena. This victory is Arsene Wenger's first win over Chelsea in the league since October 2011 (drew three, lost six). Theo Walcott scored in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since May 2013 (three in a row for the Gunners). "It was an outstanding team performance. We played with spirit and collective pace and movement, always in a positive and committed team way,” said a proud Wenger after the match. "Our defenders have done extremely well. You cannot say one player was not at the right level from Petr Cech to Alexis Sanchez.”

"We wanted to start strong in a high pace and committed way. We started wobbly in the first 20 minutes against Southampton. We wanted to be consistent in our pressure no matter the score. We did it very well in the first half. It was in and out in the second, which was understandable,” continued Wenger. "Ideally you want the perfect game and you never get it. We got nearly the perfect first half and that is not bad. Football doesn't care for history and the anniversaries, just the result on the day. Today we had a good performance." Chelsea boss Antonio Conte said his men did not get off to the right start against the Gunners.

"I think that we didn't have the right attitude from the first minute,” said Conte. "After today we are thinking we must work a lot because we are a great team only on paper. It is always a team problem rather than individuals, When nothing works it is very hard for a player to play well. I don't want to talk about the mistake [from Gary Cahill]. It is not right for the player. We win and lose as a team. If someone thinks this team is ready to fight, I think we must wait to improve a lot to come back a great team on the pitch, not just on paper. We have not got the balance and now is the moment to consider everything. It is incredible to concede three goals. We must have last season present in our mind to not repeat the mistakes. We must reflect a lot to find very soon the right way."

Arsenal compete in the Champions League tournament on Wednesday with a home tie against Swiss side Basel, then travel to Hull on Saturday in Premier League Week 7. Great Arsenal tickets are still available for both matches!
