2017 International Champions Cup update

Barcelona, Neymar on top in US 2017 ICC standings

Match Report

Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United

Spanish La Liga club Barcelona defeated English Premier League team Manchester United 1-0 with a goal from Neymar in a 2017 International Champions Cup pre-season friendly in the United States. The International Champions Cup pre-season tournament is spread between the US, China, and Singapore. Going into the friendly, Barcelona sat in the fourth spot with one win from one game (a 2-1 win over Juventus in New Jersey) while Manchester United were on top of the table with 5 points after wins over Man City and Real Madrid. Barca’s victory against the Red Devils moved them into first place and Man United into second. At 31 minutes into the game, world famous superstar striker Lionel Messi dribbled down the center, slipped the ball towards Neymar in the box. Valencia was there first but he spun on the ball and Neymar picked it up, performing a pirouette and slamming the ball home from close range making the score Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United.

All the exciting action took place in the first half of the match that was completely dominated by Barca who kept control through their dangerous big three superstars Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suarez. Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side allowed the big three Barca players too much space in the center of the pitch, allowing Barcelona to progress the ball down the field unopposed forcing the Red Devils to defend facing their own goal resulting in twelve first-half attempts by Barcelona against Man United goalie David de Gea. Blind was caught out on several occasions, and if it were not for De Gea United would have lost by a much larger margin. United’s Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba gave the best performances for Mourinho’s side. Neither team sustained injury. The score at half-time was Barcelona 1-0 Manchester United. After many changes in their squads at half-time, both teams seemed too slow in the second half.
