Initiated as a team for workers from the Volkswagen factory, Vfl Wolfsburg spent much of its history in amateur leagues. After reaching the 2nd Bundesliga in 1993 and the German Cup final in 1995, promotion to the Bundeslioga followed in 1997. The have remained at the top level since, qualifying for the Intertoto Cup four times since 2000, reaching the final in 2003.
