Newcastle and Atletico qualify for Europa League Round of 32

Newcastle advanced to the round of 32 in Europa League, while qualification for Tottenham and Liverpool hinges on their final group games following draws.

Defending champion Atletico Madrid also was among the 13 teams last night progressing to the knockout stage of Europe’s second-tier club competition.

Liverpool 2-2 Young Boys

Liverpool must wait before they can take their place in the last 32 of the Europa League after allowing Swiss side Young Boys to draw 2-2 at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers lined up a youthful side against Young Boys to save his senior players for Premier League clash against Swansea City. Brendan Rodgers is clearly focusing on making an impact with Liverpool against his former club.

Jonjo Shelvey gave Liverpool the lead in the 33rd minute of the game, but Raul Marcelo Bobadilla equalized in the 52nd minute. Joe Cole came up with what seemed like the winner in the 72nd minute, however Elsad Zverotic scored a stunning equalizer in the dying moments of the game to bring the score-line to 2-2.

Liverpool will now have to bring out their best on their trip Udinese. Joe Cole believes Liverpool is capable of coping under-pressure. The England international is hopeful of Liverpool’s victory in the final group game.

Newcastle United 1-1 Maritimo

Newcastle were pegged back by Maritimo after Sylvain Marveaux's strike, but a point was enough to qualify due to results elsewhere.

The home side nearly went ahead after just three minutes, but Davide Santon's effort was well saved by Romain Salin in the visitors' goal.

Maritimo, who knew only a win would give them any chance of qualification, had started to get into the game after a bright start from the hosts but fell behind when Marveaux broke the deadlock on 23 minutes. Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa picked out his compatriot and Marveaux made no mistake as he slotted the ball beyond Salin.

Newcastle then suffered two injury blows, with Ben Arfa forced off the field before half-time and then Papiss Cisse was withdrawn soon after the restart.

Lazio 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur drew 0-0 with Lazio to leave their progress in doubt as well. It means they must pick up up a point from their final game at home to Greek side Panathinaikos.

Hugo Lloris was the hero for Spurs, making several good stops and denying striker Kozak on several occasions throughout the game. Gareth Bale had the ball in the net in the first half for the visitors but it was wrongly ruled out for offside as the game ended 0-0.

The result means Spurs will progress to the knock-out stages if they avoid defeat against Panathinaikos in two weeks time.

Spurs fans had hoped the game in Rome would pass without incident following the attack in a nearby bar that resulted in two supporters in hospital with knife wounds.

But reports from the Stadio Olympico suggested that some Lazio fans were heard chanting "Juden Tottenham" in an apparent anti-Semitic jibe.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas has already called for Uefa to investigate.

"We will have to wait and see if there is anything to act upon," said Villas-Boas. "If there is, Uefa have to act."

Atletico Madrid 1-0 Hapoel Tel-Aviv

Atletico Madrid booked a place in the round of 32 with a narrow 1-0 win over Hapoel Tel-Aviv in Group B of the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Raul Garcia's well-taken goal, after just seven minutes would prove to be difference between the two sides, in a largely defensive and turgid encounter.

Diego Simeone made eight changes from the game against Granada at the weekend, as he celebrated his 50th official game in charge of the holders. A typically weakened side, with the likes of Jorge Pulido, Domingo Cisma and Silvio handed starts.
