Milan derby at San Siro: Ac Milan v Inter Milan

AC Milan v Inter Milan Preview – Sun Nov 20 2016

Derby della Madonnina will be played at the San Siro on November 20th as Italian superclubs AC Milan and Inter Milan compete in the most anticipated derby on the Serie A calendar this season. The most anticipated match in Serie A this week is Sunday’s Milan Derby at the San Siro between cross-town arch rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan. Stefano Pioli will make his debut appearance as Inter manager following the recent sacking of Frank de Boer. The former Lazio boss is looking to win the derby and make a good first impression as he seeks to change the fortunes of the struggling Nerazzurri. Matches between AC Milan and Inter Milan have gone both ways in recent seasons with neither side being able to assert their continuous authority on the derby. Milan are showing signs of a revival under manager Vincenzo Montella, and may be able to dominate the clash against their rivals just as they did between 2002 and 2005. With Inter down in ninth place on the top tier Italian Serie A table and AC Milan up in third, just one point off second going into the next round of fixtures, chances are Inter will win the Milan Derby. Montella’s men come into this match having won six of their last seven matches and have only lost once at home this season after conceding late in their match against Udinese back in September.

Expect a boost of confidence on the Inter Milan side from new manager Stefani Pioli who has a wealth of Italian Serie A football experience to bring to the derby. Inter is unhappy being so far down the table, so expect the footballers to agressively implement improvements to tactics under the new boss in an attempt to start back up the table. Despite their struggles this season, Inter beat two tough sides above them on the table, Juventus and Torino, as they have the mentality for the big games it seems. Inter may edge this Milan Derby in a game that has been historically rarely separated by more than a goal.

The Milan Derby looks likely to end as a low scoring affair again since only on one of the last eight occasions has this fixture seen more than 2.5 goals. Both sides have conceded only six league goals at the San Siro this season and will probably approach this derby clash conservatively. Inter’s Pioli will likely put extra focus on intensifying defense than previous boss Frank de Boer did. Red and black midfielder Andrea Poli talked with the media about several Milan Derby related topics ahead of Sunday night's derby.

"We are working well. The match is very important for us and for our fans. Playing games like this is always exciting," said Poli. "These sort of matches prepare themselves, it will be a long wait. It will be another important test after having won against Juve. We will face a team who are not living a great moment, and who are looking to get back on the right track, but we are ready and are working hard to play a great match".

The Milan Derby is a massive game for the fans and the young red and black players. "AC Milan has always had an Italian backbone, and we are trying to recreate it. We are young and we are red and black fans: this is surely a plus," said Poli. "After many years I see a great group, everybody rowing in the same direction with great desire to do well. We are young, and we can make some mistakes, that's what we have to work on".

Poli talked about his memories from his 100 appearances in three years for Red and Black. "It was a great moment. Reaching the 100 appearances in three years makes me very proud, especially if you play with the team you have always supported since you were a kid,” said Poli. "There are lots of memories: from my debut in Champions League against PSV, to my first goal with AC Milan. Football is my passion; I could play all day long. Playing for such an important club is something unbeatable, but a professional always needs dedication and self-denial. This is what gives you a winning mentality. I can play in different roles, both in a two-player and three-player midfield".

Poli was asked who his role-models are. "Iniesta, Gerrard and Lampard but also Pirlo, with whom I played with the National team". To date Juventus is in first place on the Italian Serie A Table with 30 points. Roma is in second with 26 points, AC Milan is in third with 25 points, Lazio and Atalanta have 22 points, Napoli has 21 points, Torino has 19 points and Fiorentina and Inter Milan have 17 points apiece. Next Poli talked about Inter Milan’s recent defeat by Genoa and having the right attitude of always giving all you have to each match, keeping your feet on the ground, and being conscious of doing really well this season. "It was a bump in the road, and we were not lucky. Even when we were down to 10 men we had a few chances to score and level it. Moreover, the team managed to keep the game open until five minutes from the final whistle. We must always be cool headed". Inter hope to find the score sheet early on Sunday courtesy of their Argentine star striker, Mauro Icardi. The 23 year old has been in top form for his club, despite some off-field trouble, netting five times in his last four appearances.
