Eden Hazard scores a hat trick to send Chelsea to the top

Chelsea brushed aside Newcastle 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, as Belgian superstar Eden Hazard bagged all three goals in a routine win.

Hazard scored a hat-trick for Jose Mourinho’s title-challenging side, who took control of the game late in the first-half after a bright start from an injury-hit Newcastle, who missed combative midfielder Cheik Tiote.

The Belgian continued his incredible run of form after helping his side topple Manchester City on Monday night, by notching a superb treble which takes him to 12 league goals this season.

His first came just before the half hour mark, sweeping home beyond Tim Krul after Branislav Ivanovic picked him out just inside the area.

Newcastle had a chance to equalise in the 33rd minute after Santon set free Moussa Sissoko with a fine ball, but the advancing Cech blocked his shot.

And that missed opportunity was to prove costly.

Chelsea defended thet resulting corner and broke upfield to score their second, with Hazard this time exchanging passes with Eto’o before applying the finishing touch.

After the break Chelsea had several good chances to make it 3-0, with the best coming after 57 minutes when Eto’o was found unmarked in the box but his shot was blocked by some heroic defending from Newcastle.

Moments later it was 3-0, and it was Hazard who bagged his third goal of the game from the penalty spot. The PK was given for a foul on Eto’o by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, as he pulled the Chelsea striker to the ground as corner came in.

Chelsea debutant Mohamed Salah – who came off the bench – almost marked his first appearance with a goal, but Krul was equal to his shot.

Sissoko was fortunate to escape a red card for a reckless sliding challenge on Salah in the dying minutes.

The result saw Chelsea climb to the top of the league as they took advantage of Arsenal's 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City's goalless draw with Norwich City.
