Arsenal Manchester United ends goalless

Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night to miss out on the chance to move to the top of the Premier League.

The Gunners were attempting to recover from the 5-1 mauling at Liverpool, while United were desperate to bounce back from the 2-2 draw at home to bottom club Fulham.

First real chance of the game fell to former Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie as early as the first minute, who pounced on an error by Mikel Arteta but shot back directly at Wojciech Szczesny, missing a glorious one-on-one situation.

At the other end of the pitch,Olivier Giroud headed wide after some poor play by Nemanja Vidic.

Van Persie had another chance after Juan Mata slipped through a pass to the Dutchman, but he wasted his chance to find the net.

The game continued like that lacking adventures and purpose into the second half. But the tempo was stepped up one bit.

It was Arsenal who came closest again just after the hour when Koscielny rose to meet another Cazorla corner only to see his header swept off the line by Valencia.

As the game entered its final 20 minutes both Wenger and Moyes attempted to give their sides fresh impetus as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced Rosicky and Adnan Januzaj replaced the subdued Juan Mata.

Arsenal piled on the pressure from there, with Giroud nudging Bacary Sagna's cross marginally past David de Gea's right-hand post 14 minutes from time before Van Persie's header was tipped onto the crossbar by Szczesny three minutes later.

De Gea was called into action again once more before full-time, getting a strong right hand to Cazorla's effort before tipping it around the post.

"It was a tight game, like they have been in the past. We won 1-0 up at Old Trafford. Both teams had one or two opportunities but it ended up 0-0" Moyes told reporters.

The draw left United 11 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool with 12 Premier League games left to play this season.

But Moyes was encouraged with his side’s "compact" performance despite them falling further behind in the race for a top-four finish.

"I think we lost two points, we missed an opportunity to go top of the league but a point keeps us in the race," said Wenger following Arsenal's on Wednesday night. "Where we are usually very dangerous, breaking through the middle, United defended very well. They have very experienced players in the middle there. They are very good team who can play against anyone, even our team."
