Man Utd shocked by Olympiakos in Champions League

Manchester United's miserable season went from bad to worse on Tuesday as David Moyes's lacklustre side slumped to a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their last-16 tie against Greek champions Olympiakos.

The three-time European Champions were sloppy and lacked the urgency and desire of the spritely hosts, who issued a warning shot in the opening moments when Alejandro Dominguez got the better of veteran defender Rio Ferdinand, but saw his effort blocked after a mazy run.

After a ropey opening period United looked more comfortable, though Robin van Persie was a peripheral figure upfront and strike partner Wayne Rooney was forced further and further into his own half as the £300,000-a-week man searched for the ball.

The Red Devils belatedly settled and Tom Cleverley might have taken a 17th-minute chance, slashing over when the host failed to clear a corner.

Hernan Perez whipped a 26th-minute shot against the side netting and Olympiakos continued to carry the greater threat before going ahead in fortunate circumstance.

Campbell's cross was cleared as far as Giannis Maniatis and, although the midfielder's speculative effort appeared harmless, Dominguez was alert enough inside a crowded penalty area to divert the ball past David de Gea.

The home side doubled their lead in the second half when Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell scored a curling left-footed shot from outside the area to again leave De Gea helpless.

The goal drew a disbelieving roar from the home support and within moments Moyes had reacted by introducing Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck in place of Cleverley and Antonio Valencia.

But still Olympiakos came, with Michael Olaitan lashing a snapshot narrowly over, and when a presentable chance finally fell to Robin van Persie in the 82nd minute, he blasted wastefully into the stands.

Out of both domestic cup competitions and uncomfortably adrift in the Premier League title race, Moyes spoke boldly this week of claiming Europe's top prize - but the message did not appear to get through to his players on a night of toil in Piraeus.

United will have to win by three clear goals in the second leg on March 19 to make it through to the quarter-finals, but Moyes has not given up hope just yet.

"The one good thing is that there is still a second game to come," the Scot said.

"We will do everything we can possibly do to reverse the 2-0 defeat."

FC Zenit 2-4 Borussia Dortmund

Earlier elsewhere, Robert Lewandowski grabbed a brace for Borussia Dortmund as they took four away goals into their second leg tie against Zenit, winning a very entertaining match 4-2.

Dortmund, losing finalists to Bayern Munich at Wembley last year, made a blistering start with Henrikh Mkhitaryan scoring in the fourth minute and Marco Reus doubling the lead a minute later.

Zenit, who had not played a competitive game since 11 December due to the Russian winter break, looked suitably rusty, but they pulled one back through Oleg Shatov in the 57th minute.

With the Russians looking increasingly dangerous, Dortmund broke away on the counter-attack and added a third through Robert Lewandowski.

Zenit managed to pull another goal back through an emphatic Hulk penalty, but Luciano Spalletti's side switched off again and let Lewandowski score his second of the game after he slotted the ball under Lodygin.

Both sides traded punches as the game played out its final minutes, but it will be Jurgen Klopp's men who will likely take an unassailable advantage back to Germany for the second leg.
