Liverpool claim nervy 2-1 victory over Sunderland

Liverpool renewed their Premier League title credentials after a tense 2-1 home victory over Sunderland last night.

The Reds broke the deadlock through Steven Gerrard’s perfectly-curled free kick before the interval at Anfield Road.

Soon after the re-start, Daniel Sturridge made it 2-0 with another curled shot that deflected off Wes Brown on its way to the net.

But Ki pulled one back for Sunderland in the 76th minute to set up a nervy finish as John O’Shea could have levelled the score moments later but he failed to connect with a header from close range.

Liverpool held on bravely until the final whistle to complete their 7th consecutive league win and close the gap to just 1 point with leaders Chelsea.

"It was nervy at the end but I think that will hold them in good stead between now and the end of the season," said Liverpool manager, Brendan Rogers.

"So often I've been at games where they've been two or three up at half-time and the game is finished.

"But Chelsea, City and maybe even Spurs will be stronger opposition - top teams coming to Anfield - it will be tight, it will be nervy - so to go through that and come out with the three points will do them wonders between now and the end of the season."
