Real beat 1-0 Bayern in the 1st leg of their Champions League semis

Karim Benzema’s first half goal was enough for Real Madrid to beat Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal tie yesterday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bayern controlled possession in the first 20 minutes of the game but were unable to break a solid Madrid defense and Los Blancos took the lead with their first attack.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who returned from a hamstring injury, fed Fabio Coentrao on the left wing and the defender crossed the ball for Benzema to easily send it into the net in a perfect counterattack.

The Germans continued dominating possession but Real looked more dangerous with Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria almost doubling the lead.

Gareth Bale, who had been suffering the flu, started on the bench and replaced Ronaldo midway through the second half.

Pep Guardiola’s men pushed for the equalizer but substitute Mario Gotze was denied by Iker Casillas and Madrid hold on to take the advantage into next week’s second leg in Munich.

"The game was more or less as I expected," Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted after the match.

"We began a bit timid as we needed more intensity to pressure further up. The first 15-20 mins were difficult but then the team played much better, above all in second half. We did not have the efficiency of the first half but we controlled the game better."

"I am very proud of my team, we played very very well. It is not easy to come here to Bernabeu and play a semifinal," said Pep Guardiola.

"In football the quicker the ball goes up, the quicker it comes back," he added. "Madrid are the best team in the world playing counterattack. They are athletes. If you let them run, and game becomes stretched, it is a risk. We did not want that."
