Liverpool routs Everton 4-0 in Merseyside derby

Daniel Sturridge scored a brace as impressive Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 victory against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Steven Gerrard gave the home side the lead 20 minutes in, heading in from a corner after a strong start by Liverpool.

A quick-fire brace from Daniel Sturridge extended the advantage and ensured that Brendan Rodgers' men had a comfortable lead at the break.

Luis Suarez got in the act with Liverpool's fourth goal early in the second half and things could have been even worse for Everton as Sturridge fluffed the chance to net a hat-trick when he missed from the penalty spot, but it did not matter in the end as Brendan Rodgers recorded his first victory in a Merseyside derby to see his side go four points clear of their local rivals in the table.

The two halves of Merseyside went into this contest separated by just a single point in the league standings and both with depleted squads through injury.

Liverpool fashioned their first chance of the game after just three minutes when the ball dropped invitingly for Jordan Henderson 25 yards from goal and his volley was beaten away Tim Howard.

Liverpool made the breakthrough their early dominance deserved on 21 minutes when Reds skipper Gerrard rose highest to power home Suarez's corner with Barkley on the post unable to keep it out.

In a double blow for Everton they lost Romelu Lukaku to injury after he collided with team-mate Barry from the corner and was replaced by Steven Naismith.

Simon Mignolet had to make his first save of the match on the half-hour mark to deny Barry after Sturridge's mistake had let Everton in. However, two goals in two minutes effectively ended the match as a contest.

In the 33rd minute Sturridge kept his cool by firing past Howard after being sent clear by Philippe Coutinho's clever pass.

Two minutes later, Sturridge clipped the ball over the Everton keeper after Kolo Toure had played him in.

Leon Osman replaced Pienaar at the break and took just three minutes to make an impact as he forced Mignolet into a reflex save.

Liverpool looked dangerous every time they came forward and Suarez put them out of sight after 50 minutes when he raced clear and calmly placed the ball beyond Howard.

Sturridge had a golden opportunity to complete his hat-trick three minutes later, but he put a penalty into the Kop after Howard had upended Sterling in the area.

The goals take Suarez to 23 for the season and Sturridge 17, and their skipper believes that threat has catapulted Liverpool back into the title race.

"We’ve got two world class forwards and with them we have always got a chance. The aim all season has always been top four and we are very much in that now," Brendan Rogers told reporters.

The victory gives the Reds a massive advantage over their neighbours in the race for fourth place, and afterwards their manager Roberto Martinez admitted his Toffees had been naive in the way they had been blown apart in the first half.

"It wasn’t anywhere near our level - in the first half we didn’t have anywhere near the intensity required for a game like this," he admitted.
